I'm a big fan of the CGBros channel. They showcase a variety of artists, and cover just about every genre. usually the offerings are sharp, have a good rhythm to the animation, and convey a story nicely.

The Secret World of Foley

I knew that movies had sound added after shooting. I didn't know that *all* the sound was added after shooting. The Secret World is a documentary about the people who make movie sounds. All of them. The effect is both surreal and mesmerizing.

I think I was born in the wrong era. We can "ooh" and "aaah" over modern films, but imagine what it was like to go your entire life watching flickering silent films only to sit down and watch... and hear!... The Jazz Singer, or to step into colorful Oz with Dorothy.

What got me about The Secret World wasn't the "sound effects" but that every random sound has to be added in later. It's very strange. It seems to be partially a historical artifact -- good mics appeared slowly, and the best were developed long after talkies -- and partially by choice. It's much easier to make a scene sound a particular way if all the sound is made and mixed later.

Still strange.

As an amateur historian, I rather like The History of ~~Urbanization~~ Urban Censuses. The page it was embedded on is pretty interesting too. Well, at least to those of us who like cities and where they came from... and why!
